How to Encourage Writers This Christmas

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

It’s December, the month of Christmas, and we’re all scrambling for the perfect gift for our writerly friends. The opportunity should be easy, but when we choose to offer something special that encourages them, our creative minds head into overdrive.

Here are a few ways you can encourage another writer this Christmas.

  1. Consider a holiday brunch, dessert buffet, or a luncheon in your home for just your writer friends. You can talk about writing until there are no more words.

  1. Promote another writer’s book on social media.

  1. Does the writer have small children and would welcome you keeping her little ones while she writes? Could you prepare a meal that frees up the writer for a few hours?

  1. Suggest a work morning together at a favorite café or coffee shop.

  1. Offer to edit a chapter for a new writer – or any writer. Be gentle, kind, gracious, encouraging, and compassionate.

  1. Suggest monthly online or face-to-face writerly meetings that are designed to encourage and share information.

  1. Give an online bookstore gift card.

  1. Send an e-card that is fun and encouraging.

  1. Take #8 to the next level and send a writer(s) an encouraging e-card each month.

  1. Encourage the writer(s) to write and write some more.

  1. Give a devotional journal that focuses on writing, creativity, or inspiration for the imaginative person.

  1. Fun gifts for writers puts a smile on a tired and discouraged writer.

This site offers 50 Motivational Quotes for Writers. Perhaps you can use one or all of them to weekly encourage a writer weekly. Just add 2 of your own to the mix for a year of Writerly Blessings.

You can gift a writer with encouragement by showing friendship and love. What ideas can you share?
