Celebrating our writing can commemorate who we and our fellow writers are as writers. We are unique people who believe in the power of communication through the written word. We have special talents for different genres, and we are thrilled when readers value our work.
Measuring our success according to others is not the way to celebrate. Negative thinking and comparisons lead to discouragement and often abandoned projects. Instead, we embrace who we are and our unique talents.
What does it mean to celebrate writing? Let’s review our initial goals for our chosen craft:
- We believe writing is a calling to bring enlightenment to the world.
- We value increasing our knowledge of the craft and the publishing industry.
- We understand writing entertains, inspires, encourages, and teaches the reader and ourselves.
- We embrace reading and writing go hand in hand.
- We involve ourselves in celebrating writing.

Our goals are community, and we thrive on filling the empty places in readers’ lives with quality content. When we pursue our dreams, a part of the process is to recognize our efforts and successes. The following are seven ways to celebrate writing.
-
Acknowledge our writing journey, not to glorify ourselves but to self-affirm how far we’ve come.
- When did we first hear the call to write?
- How did we begin?
- List our accomplishments.
-
Reflect on our progress.
- What goals have we reached?
- Take time to appreciate our writing journey.
- How have we overcome inappropriate criticism and rejection?
- Reflect on milestones.
- How have we grown mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually?
-
Host an online or in-person event where writers can share the joy of writing.
- Make this a true party!
- If in-person, select a spot where food and beverages are part of the celebration. Don’t forget balloons and party favors!
- If online, schedule games and prizes. Books or a gift card from a retail outlet that sells books is a fun way to celebrate. Everyone could chip in a few dollars or donate a gift.
- Introduce and praise every writer in attendance.
-
Treat yourself to something special by engaging in an activity that brings joy and satisfaction. This means time for the writer.
- Time to take a vacation, shopping, a meal at a favorite restaurant, a trip to a museum, or even the zoo.
- Time spent on a hobby.
- Time in nature to soak up the peacefulness.
- Time for a pampering, like a spa treatment, massage, manicure, or pedicure.
-
Set new goals that appeal to our sense of adventure.
- Challenge ourselves to write in a new genre.
- Explore new techniques to market and promote.
- Spurge on a special writing conference.
- Read in all genres.
- Have fun!
No matter how a writer chooses to celebrate writing, make it memorable. You are part of a grand party.
