BRMCWC is More Than a Writing Conference

By Heather Kreke @HKreke

I like to think of BRMCWC as Disney Parks. There are many parks, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Paris, and etc. but it’s all Disney. BRMCWC has many parts as well. But it’s all under the BRMCWC umbrella.

Conference

The Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference began nearly four decades ago as a spirit-filled environment where writers could move forward in their writing journey and publishing dreams. The legacy event is focused on God’s path for each writer, and the conference is dedicated to meeting professional and spiritual needs.

The goal is for each attendee to hear from God—direction and encouragement to pursue His path. We understand the difficulties. The publishing journey isn’t a day trip but a climb toward excellence. Many of us have gotten lost—miserably. Our objective is for no writer to be left stranded on a cliff with nowhere to turn. We can’t guarantee a smooth path every step of the way, but we can show you how to avoid many of the obstacles.

The mission of the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference is to inspire writers to connect with God, other writers, and industry professionals as they embrace their calling with excellence.

We believe God can change the world by working through individual writers. Our mission is to encourage writers and would-be writers to courageously step out and follow the call of God. To this end, we provide connection points with God, other writers and industry professionals through onsite events, digital gatherings, and ongoing mentoring opportunities. Together we’re building a community of believers coming together to serve God through all aspects of writing.

And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”—Matthew 13:52 (ESV)

Mountainside Retreats

They are limited to small groups to ensure one-on-one instruction and attention, along with large group teaching times. These 4-day events are hands-on, working retreats where attendees have the opportunity to practice what they learn with instructors who have mastered the techniques. So pack up your questions—along with your tools and a spirit of adventure—as we head onward and upward together.

There are four different retreats offered by BRMCWC Marketing, Nonfiction,  Novelist, and Speaking.

Dates for retreats are TBD, but check back often to get the latest news.

Sensitivity Between the Lines

BRMCWC’s newest endeavor is Sensitivity Between the Lines.

Consider the world you live in. Your cultural experiences, likes, dislikes, fears, and even biases are based on your community. As an author writing about another culture, how can you best represent a group of people who are not like you? One way is through help from a sensitivity reader. Without a sensitivity reader, the likelihood of authentic representation significantly dwindles. Why? Because from the outside looking in, it’s unlikely that you as the author would understand the complete experience of what it means to be a part of a marginalized community. The role of a sensitivity reader is not censorship but to assist the author in creating an accurate portrayal of a marginalized community.

The purpose of this group is to help connect writers with professional sensitivity readers in an environment that brings both together and assists in strengthening writers’ understanding and authenticity in their manuscript concerning a marginalized community.

Blue Ridge Reader Connections

The BRRC’s aim is to create a place for readers and book clubs to take their reading experience deeper. This is more than opening a brand new book. This is where you can find a new author or rediscover an old favorite, and interact with them, check out new writers, and hear about upcoming releases.

With over seventy authors and one thousand plus members in our FaceBook group, we put writers in front of new readers. With writer takeover days, panel discussions, and many more benefits for authors. You will be able to connect with your readers on a whole new level.
