Your IT Infrastructure : Planning for the Future   by Nick Pegley

Managing a Data Center

Virtualization was a popular discussion topic at the Interop conference. The term ‘virtualization’ refers to masking computing characteristics through encapsulation. This process includes making physical resources seem to operate like multiple logical resources. It may also include making storage devices or servers seem like one single resource. Although virtualization can reduce the total amount of servers, that doesn’t mean that administration time is also reduced. Administration costs can drain the entire process and the campaign to arrive at a cost-effective strategy.

Most data centers or server rooms should be built to last seven to ten years to be most effective. The servers should accomodate 10 GB (gigabits) of data, and with the demand on bandwidth constantly growing, technology planners should prepare for the need to run 100 GB efficiently. Another common concern is is the need to cool and power the server room; as an example, the Google IT staff pays more to cool the rooms every year than the cost of the servers within the data centers.

Infrastructure and Services

Data Center management has virtualization benefits that deserve a closer look, even though experts will point out the reality that this strategy can create far more work, especially in larger environments. Asset Management Network Administrators need to keep good equipment records, not just count the servers and work stations. This information must be utilized well for administrative and security purposes in addition to lifecycle management and optimization.

Secure & Compliant

Many companies offer perimiter defense systems using Unified Threat Management and Web Gateways. These systems monitor and block web usage, meanwhile creating a defense against complex attacks. This defense is made possible using a combination of tactics including prevention and early detection. NAC, or Network Access Control, prohibits users from gaining unauthorized access through Ethernet or wireless points. Every security plan needs encryption.

Wireless Mobility

Many speakers talked about ways to get corporate data from a mobile phone. The necessary security includes SSL and encryption, also making sure that the data flowing between wireless and HQ is secure in transit. Most businesses are on the way to a more mobile workforce; this requirement is not just for executive staff anymore as the amount of field personnel, sales reps, and telecommuters increases.

Collaboration and Voice Over Internet Protocol

While most people agree that VoIP and Collaboration technology are significant advantages, vendors and speakers also agree there’s no one single solution. Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWF) was also demonstrated. Even though many office locations are wi-fi connected, there are some complexities and solution to make VoIP work on the these networks as well.
