On large software development projects, the final product is in fact a combination of numerous modules each independently coded by a team of developers. In order to ensure that the entire project is delivered on time and that it meets the end users specifications, there is need for coordination between the various teams. The software release manager is the person charged with this coordination so that all modules are brought together to work seamlessly before the product is eventually released to the end user. The release manager is in effect a project manager.
A software release manager will be involved in three types of software development projects.
* Major releases – Major releases that incorporate key changes to an existing application. An example of a major release includes fundamental changes to the user interface, additional software features and significant enhancements to existing capabilities.
* Minor improvements – These are projects that address small system defects.
* Patches – Patches are improvements that address critical system defects and repairs such as security vulnerabilities.
A release manager must possess several skills including project management, management of the end users requirements specifications, quality control, configuration control and knowledge of system architecture. The software release manager will usually oversee several multidisciplinary teams and even though he or she is not expected to be an expert in all areas, a good grasp of fundamental principles and emerging trends in information technology is vital. Specifically, the manager must have a working knowledge the SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle), software development tools (such as code management applications and testing tools) and several of the more commonly used programming languages.
The manager must have a big picture mentality and appreciate the multiple participants and stakeholders that each software development project involves. It is the role of the release manager to coordinate the setting up of test environments to facilitating final quality check by the end users before the application is eventually signed off and released. Strong communication and coordination skills are crucial in making sure that each team understands and executes its task as required.
For the release manager to thrive in the software release management process, an undergraduate degree in information technology, computer science or business is most preferred. That said, the release manager’s role and responsibilities are quite complex and typically span multiple departments (sometimes divisions in several countries) in an organization. Therefore, the position will usually be filled by someone who already has several years of work experience in software development, project management, quality control and business process analysis as opposed to an entry level member of staff.
The salary of a software release manager ranges from $66,536 to $89,831 but total annual compensation can go up to $95,468 each year when bonuses are factored in. A release manager role can be found in any industry where software plays a major part in the smooth functioning of business processes. Such industries would include bank, accounting and consulting firms, insurance, system development companies and medical care institutions.
